In the 1930s, when Herb Nelson’s sons, Melvin, Ernest and Ray, decided they wanted to brave the stormy bar of Willapa Bay to go fishing for Dungeness crab, there was one small problem: they had nowhere to sell their catch. While that was enough to stop other fishermen it didn’t stop the Nelsons. To Herb, and his other son Chris, the answer was simple: build a cannery.

In 1934, Nelson Crab and Oyster opened their doors of the first crab cannery on the West Coast. Located in the little village of Tokeland, on a spit at the north end of the pristine Willapa Bay National Wildlife refuge on the Washington coast, Nelson Crab, Inc. today is run by Kristi, Chris’ daughter, the third generation of Nelsons to operate the business.

Over the years, Nelson Crab has built its reputation on taking the extra time and effort to produce only the best, all-natural, wild seafood from the Pacific Northwest. Our signature products include Dungeness crab, wild salmon and albacore tuna. Fresh, frozen or canned, we use no preservatives or chemicals in our seafood. Pure, natural wild seafood – nothing tastes better.
