Blue Ocean Mariculture | Hawaiian Kanpachi
✕Blue Ocean is at the forefront of marine finfish mariculture, particularly for Seriola spp. Blue Ocean Mariculture is dedicated to the sustainable, responsible production of marine finfish in Hawaii. They are defining the technology, tools, and techniques for successful, sustainable open ocean mariculture in the United States. Their Hawaiian Kanpachi:
- Require less feed relative to the production of other animal proteins.
- Are made in the USA, reducing the total carbon costs of reaching U.S. markets.
- Use limited, and decreasing, amounts of wild fishmeal and fish oil.
- Are sited and managed to minimize the impact on shared ocean resources.
Known locally as Kahala or Almaco Jack, Hawaiian Kanpachi is related to the broader family of Seriola spp. which includes Yellowtail, Hiramasa and Amberjack. Their fish are hatched from locally caught brood fish and grown to market size in the clear, offshore waters of Kona, Hawaii. Hawaiian Kanpachi is available year-round and harvested only as ordered.
Blue Ocean’s offshore facility is sheltered from the Pacific Ocean trade winds by several volcanoes, including Mauna Kea and Hualalai. Consistent water temperature, mild weather and strong ocean currents make the Kona coast a perfect location for open ocean mariculture. Their hatchery facility is located at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA), which provides unique access to high-quality surface and deep ocean seawater.
Blue Ocean operates a completely integrated mariculture system (fish or other marine life cultivated for food) to ensure the highest quality Hawaiian Kanpachi.
