West Coast Fishculture (Lois Lake) Ltd.
✕West Coast Fishculture (Lois Lake) Ltd. was established in 1973 as a family fish farming business by Ward Griffioen. Originally rearing coho, Chinook, and Atlantic salmon, West Coast Fishculture has grown over the years and is now owned and operated by AgriMarine and specializes in farmed steelhead.
West Coast Fishculture’s Lois Lake Steelhead are raised in the deep, cold, clean waters of Lois Lake, near the city of Powell River. Their steelhead were originally reared in net-cages moored in over 300 feet of water, near the center of lake. In recent years, AgriMarine has developed and implemented a system of semi-closed, solid-walled, floating rearing tanks as an alternative to conventional open net pen systems and to enhance production. West Coast Fishculture’s Lois Lake Steelhead are fed with high-grade sustainable feeds that contain high levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. A clean environment and nutritional feed has allowed their steelhead to flourish and the result is a great tasting, healthy fish.
The farm team at West Coast Fishculture regularly grades their steelhead while maintaining the fish environment to ensure it is both clean and healthy. Their meticulous processes and procedures ensure that only the healthiest fish are harvested for their customers. All steelhead are processed in West Coast Fishculture’s in-house processing facilities that regularly process between 30,000 and 40,000 lbs. of steelhead every week. Their steelhead are immediately chilled and shipped after harvest – ensuring maximum quality and freshness.
In addition to being known for producing a quality, flavorful fish, West Coast Fishculture is also known for sustainability. Their Lois Lake Steelhead conforms to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s Code of Conduct. West Coast Fishculture has also worked closely over the years with the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise program which recommends their steelhead as a sustainable seafood option.
