Coastal Villages Region Fund is one of six community groups in Alaska that were created in 1992 to enable the coastal communities along Alaskas Bering Sea coast to share in the economic benefits of the Bering Sea pollock fishery. Initially, these Community Development Quota (CDQ) groups were allocated 7.5 percent of the Bering Sea pollock quota. Since CDQs were established, however, the pollock CDQ has been increased to 10 percent and CDQs have also been established for all the other Bering Sea groundfish fisheries, as well as halibut, sablefish and crab.

The revenue generated from its CDQ quotas has allowed Coastal Villages to invest in factory trawlers and build shore-based processing plants and buying stations to create jobs and provide markets for fishermen in the 20 coastal communities that are part of Coastal Villages. Coastal Villages is increasingly involved in the sales and marketing of its own seafood production, which includes salmon, halibut, sablefish, groundfish and crab.
